چکیده

The spitting spider Scytodes fusca is a species complex well known for its unusual hunting technique which involves venomous sticky silken substance over prey. Previous studies supposed that S. was native to Central and South America but had expanded the tropics of almost every continent. We aimed test hypothesis Neotropical origin this followed by secondary dispersal other regions, discuss how population expansion occurring in driven. investigated structure spatiotemporal biogeography through culmination 22 years comprehensive global sampling using mitochondrial nuclear loci (COI, 16S, 18S, 28S, H3 ITS2). divided into two clades. Spitting Performance Parameters and Their Biomechanical Implications in the Spitting Spider, Scytodes thoracica

Spitting spiders Scytodes spp. subdue prey by entangling them at a distance with a mixture of silk, glue, and venom. Using high-speed videography and differential interference contrast microscopy, the performance parameters involved in spit ejection by Scytodes thoracica (Araneae, Scytodidae) were measured. These will ultimately need to be explained in biomechanical and fluid dynamic terms. It ...

Increasing Liana Abundance and Basal Area in a Tropical Forest: The Contribution of Longdistance Clonal Colonization

Recent evidence suggests that liana abundance and biomass are increasing in Neotropical forests, representing a major structural change to tropical ecosystems. Explanations for these increases, however, remain largely untested. Over an 8-yr period (1999–2007), we censused lianas in nine, 24 9 36 m permanent plots in old-growth and selectively logged forest at La Selva Biological Station, Costa ...

Multiple pathways of commodity crop expansion in tropical forest landscapes

Commodity crop expansion, for both global and domestic urban markets, follows multiple land change pathways entailing direct and indirect deforestation, and results in various social and environmental impacts. Here we compare six published case studies of rapid commodity crop expansion within forested tropical regions. Across cases, between 1.7% and 89.5% of new commodity cropland was sourced f...

Characterization of Three Venom Peptides from the Spitting Spider Scytodes thoracica

We present the solution-state NMR structures and preliminary functional characterizations of three venom peptides identified from the spitting spider Scytodes thoracica. Despite little sequence identity to other venom peptides, structural characterization reveals that these peptides contain an inhibitor cystine knot motif common to many venom peptides. These are the first structures for any pep...

A social spider algorithm for global optimization

The growing complexity of real-world problems hasmotivated computer scientists to search for efficient problem-solving methods. Metaheuristics based on evolutionary computa-tion and swarm intelligence are outstanding examples of nature-inspired solution techniques. Inspired by the social spiders, wepropose a novel Social Spider Algorithm (SSA) to solve globaloptimization...
